Sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine resistance study
The aim of this project is to strengthen in-country capacity for assessing the impact of genetic markers of SP resistance in the malaria parasite. Following implementation of PMC in Osun state, Nigeria, the frequency of resistance markers in the malaria parasite will be assessed in the study population of children 2‒18 months.
Project objectives are:
• To assess changes in the ratio and frequency of SP resistance markers, such as dhps-540E, and investigate the impact of the recently emerged dhps variant, VAGKGS, on the effectiveness of SP in the study population.
• To transfer technical knowledge on the use of amplicon deep sequencing for assessing SP resistance markers to the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) and the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD).
• To strengthen in-country technical capacity for assessing the impact of SP resistance markers.
