In Togo, critical gaps in access to quality healthcare and community health systems hinder effective malaria control. Despite the availability of low-cost treatment, malaria remains a leading health challenge — particularly among children under five. Transmission occurs mainly during the rainy season.

In partnership with Togo’s Ministry of Health, Malaria Consortium delivers seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) programmes, working with the Global Fund and UNICEF to support campaign planning, comprehensive training of community distributors, and community engagement across the Savanes, Kara and Centrale regions — and, since 2024, Plateaux.

By integrating data-driven decision-making using tools that help monitor and improve the quality and coverage of SMC delivery and supporting regional and district health management teams, we are improving both the coverage and sustainability of malaria prevention.

Togo at a glance

Malaria is highly endemic nationwide and the leading cause of death in children under five.

In 2023, Togo recorded 770,679 malaria cases and 1,281 malaria-related deaths.

Our impact

▶ Since 2020, Malaria Consortium has supported SMC delivery in Togo, reaching up to 554,961 children with the first dose in the 2024 campaign.

▶ We have strengthened surveillance systems, supported the training of village and mobile malaria workers, and helped document response activities to prevent malaria re-transmission.

▶ We are aiding child survival by implementing immunisation into SMC campaigns, helping to identify and reach under-immunised and zero-dose children (those who have not received any routine vaccines) with life-saving vaccines.
