In Chad, illnesses such as malaria, diarrhoeal diseases and lower respiratory infections are a major concern, particularly among children. In fact, Chad faces one of the world’s highest under-five mortality rates.

Together with the Ministry of Health and implementing partners, Malaria Consortium is strengthening community-based health systems and improving equitable access to essential care.

Our work has focused on improving pneumonia case management, drawing on our experience in conducting large-scale studies, and reaching children with life-saving seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC). To address knowledge gaps related to the delivery, quality and impact of SMC, we have conducted several implementation research studies that will enable international and country partners to make informed decisions on SMC policy and practice.

Chad at a glance

66 percent of the population lives in high malaria-transmission areas, principally in the southern half of the country.

There were an estimated 3.9 million malaria cases and 13,707 deaths in 2023.

The under-five mortality rate is 101 deaths per 1,000 live births.

Our impact

▶ Malaria Consortium established an office in N'Djamena, the capital of Chad, in 2016.

▶ In 2024, we supported seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) delivery in 30 health districts, reaching over one million children under five.

We have advanced research on SMC delivery, quality and coverage — including studies on extending SMC to older children.

▶ In 2021, Malaria Consortium supported the Ministry of Health to create a national paediatric pneumonia control strategy to strengthen pneumonia case management and reduce mortality due to pneumonia.
