In the Sahel region of sub-Saharan Africa, 60 percent of malaria cases occur during the rainy season. Among those most at risk are children under five. Seasonal malaria chemoprevention is a course of medicine that is up to 75 percent effective in preventing malaria in under-fives at this risky time of year. ACCESS-SMC, led by Malaria Consortium in partnership with Catholic Relief Services, is a three-year, UNITAID-funded project which will provide an estimated 45 million treatments to 10 million vulnerable children in the Sahel by 2017.
