After years of steady progress in controlling malaria, Ethiopia faced an unexpected resurgence of cases in 2024.

Due to a confluence of factors including climate change, insecticide resistance, weakened surveillance, service disruptions and new development corridors, the country reported 12.5 million malaria cases in that year alone.

In response, Malaria Consortium partnered with Ethiopia's Ministry of Health to help curb transmission through the Accelerating Burden Reduction towards Malaria Elimination project — leveraging high-level advocacy, targeted training, rapid community-based surveillance and strong collaboration with local health authorities.
