Resources: Learning brief

In Burkina Faso, we adapted to socio-economic differences and rapid urbanisation to ensure effective SMC campaign delivery in an urban setting.

In 2019, our seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) programme took place in Burkina Faso's rural and urban settings, as part of the country’s policy of achieving nationwide coverage with SMC distributed in all 70 districts. The capital, Ouagadougou, was also covered for the first time. During implementation, socio-economic differences between urban and rural settings, and rapid urbanisation in Ouagadougou impacted campaign delivery more significantly than anticipated, necessitating strategic adaptations. This learning brief details our lessons learnt.
