What is Effective Altruism
Effective Altruism (EA) is a philosophical and social movement guided by the idea of using evidence and reason to determine how to help others as effectively as possible, and then taking action based on that understanding. This movement consists of organisations that advocate for funding the most cost-effective, evidence-based programmes to save and improve lives.
Malaria Consortium values the Effective Altruism community and collaborates with many EA organisations worldwide that primarily donate funds to our seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) programme as a GiveWell recommended ‘top charity’ programme that demonstrates high impact and strong evidence of effectiveness.

Malaria is a preventable and curable disease, however it still killed an estimated 597,000 people in 2023, with 95% of these deaths occurring in the WHO African Region, and 76% of those being children under 5 (World Health Organization’s World Malaria Report, 2024). In addressing this significant and solvable problem the Effective Altruism community are channelling funds to do good, more effectively.
We have been recognised as a GiveWell Top Charity since 2016 for our SMC programme, based on its exceptional cost-effectiveness, strong evidence base and robust monitoring systems. GiveWell’s endorsement has enabled Malaria Consortium to expand our reach significantly, helping protect millions of children annually from malaria.
Dr James Tibenderana, Chief Executive at Malaria Consortium
“At Malaria Consortium, we are dedicated to expanding our SMC programme and strengthening healthcare systems. In 2024, we reached over 22.5 million children across six countries, with over 16 million children supported by philanthropic funding, including those from displaced and flooded areas.
These accomplishments showcase our strong partnerships with national malaria programmes, ensuring eligible children receive vital malaria protection even in tough conditions. We are thankful to our donors, partners, healthcare workers and staff for their commitment.”
Our Effective Altruism partners
We believe that our record speaks for itself. We are enormously proud that GiveWell recognises our expertise in delivering high-impact, cost-effective programmes like seasonal malaria chemoprevention and long-lasting insecticidal nets, as well as our proven success in establishing the effectiveness of our programmes through robust monitoring and evaluation.

GiveWell
A non-profit dedicated to finding outstanding giving opportunities and publishing the full details of their analysis to help donors decide where to give. It focuses on finding a small number of outstanding giving opportunities, instead of reviewing as many organisations or as many causes as possible. It conducts in-depth research to determine how much good a given programme accomplishes (in terms of lives saved, lives improved) per dollar spent. More than 135,000 donors have trusted GiveWell to direct their donations. Together, they have given over $2.4 billion to the organisations and grants they have recommended.
Malaria Consortium’s seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) programme has been recognised as a GiveWell Top Charity since 2016, based on its proven cost-effectiveness, strong evidence at reducing child mortality and robust monitoring and evaluation systems. GiveWell’s giving funds have enabled Malaria Consortium to expand the number of children receiving SMC drugs, helping protect millions of children annually from malaria. Malaria Consortium has also received funding from GiveWell to deliver targeted projects to strengthen the impact of malaria prevention, including research on long-lasting insecticidal net (LLIN) campaigns to assess real-world coverage, durability and resistance; the co-delivery of vitamin A supplementation during SMC to explore integrated child health delivery; and the Be In a Net behavioural pilot to identify ways to increase mosquito net use. These initiatives are designed to generate evidence that improves the effectiveness and cost-efficiency of malaria control strategies.
