This learning brief discusses ACCESS-SMC’s approach to scaling up SMC coverage and the impact ACCESS-SMC has had on the reduction of malaria cases in children under five across the Sahel region of Sub- Saharan Africa. Having shown a scale-up of SMC in the Sahel is feasible and effective, the learning during the 2015 and 2016 SMC implementation cycles serve as a basis for recommendations for future scale-up interventions of SMC to achieve coverage of all eligible children.
ACCESS-SMC is a UNITAID-funded project, led by Malaria Consortium in partnership with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) that began leading the first scale up of seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) in 2014. It has supported National Malaria Control and Elimination Programs administer 45 million treatments of SMC in seven countries (Burkina Faso, Chad, Guinea, Mali, Niger, Nigeria and The Gambia).
