Giving Tuesday Facebook match

How you can double your donation to Malaria Consortium this Giving Tuesday

Since 2016, Facebook has run a programme to match donations made through its fundraising tools on Giving Tuesday. This year, they will match gifts up to a total of $7 million.

This is a lot of money – but, incredibly, last year the match ended in just 15 seconds.

We have no idea how quickly it will go this year – it could be gone in a second. The match starts at 1pm GMT on 3 December 2019 (8am EST, 2pm CET). To see the start time in your country, click here.

So, to take advantage of this opportunity to double your donation to Malaria Consortium, and double your impact, you need to be ready.

What do I need to do?

Our fantastic partners at Effective Altruism have helped to make this as simple as possible. They have set up two Facebook fundraisers for Malaria Consortium – one to donate to the organisation in general, and one to donate specifically to our seasonal malaria chemoprevention programme.

They have also created some step-by-step guides on what you need to do, both in advance and on the day itself, in order to maximise the likelihood that your donation will be matched by Facebook.

You can see the full list of instructions here. We have broken them down below for you, too.

Click on the category that best describes you, and you’ll be taken to a new page that explains the process.

A note on tax

It is really important to note that donors based outside the US will almost certainly lose out on any tax benefits they would receive from donating to a registered non-profit in their own country (for example, Gift Aid in the UK).

Also, there is a considerable amount of risk that donations will not get matched, so the matching funds may not compensate for the loss in tax benefits. If you donate, and the Facebook matching fund limit has already been reached, your donation will still be completed and sent to Malaria Consortium.
