Malaria is highly endemic in Ethiopia, where, according to the WHO, 67 per cent of the population are at risk of malaria transmission.  In 2010 in Ethiopia, there were 4,068,764 probable and confirmed cases of malaria and 1,581 reported deaths from malaria (World Malaria Report 2011). Malaria is also a significant burden on child mortality, accounting for 2 per cent of all under-five deaths in Ethiopia in 2010 (Global Health Observatory Data Repository).

General Government expenditure on health as a percentage of total government expenditure in Ethiopia in 2010 was 13.5 per cent, falling below the 15 per cent Abuja target.
