Monitoring and Evaluation of LLN Distribution Campaign in Ondo and Anambra States, Nigeria

Malaria Consortium is implementing a three-year research project studying the epidemiological and entomological impacts of ITN distribution campaigns in Ondo and Anambra States in Nigeria. Both the campaigns and studies are funded by Good Ventures Foundation.

Malaria Consortium implemented an ITN campaign in December 2021 in collaboration with the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP) during which 2.97 million nets containing the insecticide alpha-cypermethrin and the synergist piperonyl butoxide (PBO). A similar campaign is scheduled for implementation in Anambra State in April 2022.

In Ondo State, the M&E research will assess the outcomes of the campaign in terms of changes in ITN ownership and use, measuring changes in malaria incidence rates at selected health facilities across the state, entomological impacts of the ITN distribution campaign such as vector biting habits and insecticide resistance, durability of the nets over three years, and economic and financial costs of the campaign. The study in Anambra is similar but excludes monitoring of malaria incidence and vector biting habits. Meteorological data will be used to interpret data on trends in the various epidemiological, entomological and ITN durability indicators. The findings will be used to improve vector control decisions and, for a deeper understanding of the cost-effectiveness of the intervention.
