inSCALE Village Health Clubs- local solutions for improved child health

In Uganda 154 children under the age of five die every day from diarrhoea, pneumonia and malaria. The Ministry of Health is using volunteer community health workers, known locally as village health team members (VHTs) to reduce child mortality in the country.

The inSCALE project seeks to promote the VHTs as village health assets, through community involvement. The film follows Beatrice Katusabe, a VHT coordinating a community owned village health club in Kisongi village. Through community participation as a result of the clubs, Beatrice and her community tell us that there has been a change in the community's behaviour; not only are members following best practices in their homes to avoid getting sick, they are also visiting their VHTs more often and trusting their diagnosis and advice.
