Podoconiosis is a non-infectious neglected tropical disease caused by chronic exposure of bare feet to irritants in volcanic clay soils. Ethiopia has the highest number of cases worldwide. Farmers (mostly women), marginalised people and those living in poverty are disproportionately affected as they typically lack access to shoes, which are the first-line preventive measure against podoconiosis.
Malaria Consortium aims to improve the prevention and management of podoconiosis by creating universal access to better quality preventive and healthcare management services, and has drawn up a series of recommendations for key stakeholders, including government departments and partner organisations.
