Q: What are the current challenges in diagnosing and treating pneumonia?
A: Diagnosis of pneumonia by community health workers (CHWs) is commonly based on counting the number of breaths in 60 seconds. However, manually counting RR can be challenging due to the difficulties in accurately counting chest movements for a full minute. Therefore, misclassification of observed rates is common, leading to incorrect diagnosis and consequently inappropriate antibiotic treatment, contributing to the spread of antibiotic resistance.
