Inhambane province district of Panda

Geographical Location

The Panda district is located in the southern part of Inhambane province, south of Mozambique. Its seat is the township of Panda. Has a geographical boundary, with the district of Funhalouro in the North, in East is limited by Homoíne district, in South by the district of Inharrime, and in West is limited by districts of Chigubo, Chibuto and Manjacaze,  of Gaza Province.

Area and population
The district of Panda has an area of ?6841 square kilometers and a total population of 47,799, according to the results of the 2007 Census, corresponding in a density of 6,99 inhabitants per km². The population recorded in 2007 represents an increase of only 3,0% compared to 46 539 inhabitants registered in the 1997 Census.

Source of Income
Agriculture is the dominant activity and involves the majority of local households. The main food crops of the family sector are maize, cassava, peanuts and beans. The most important livestock in the district, for the consumption of households and marketing are chickens and goats.

Health
The district has five health facilities, which represent 4,9% of the 103 existing health facilities  throughout the Inhambane province. In general are there are 1.36 beds per 1000 inhabitants. There are 29 beds in both adult and paedriatic wards and 38 beds in maternity wards. In 2010, the case fatality rate due to malaria in paedriatic wards was 3,5%.

Number of APE
The district has 07 APEs, 3 under the supervision of the CS Panda (Health Center), 3 are supervised by CS Massalane and one is supervised by the CS Mawaela.

Education
In terms of infrastructure by the year 2008, the Panda district had a total of 53 schools of which 51 are primary schools in grades I and II, and a Technical Secondary 1-profissinal. The total number of students is 13,690 for 1431 and primary levels to secondary school. The illiteracy rate is 64,8%.
