Geographic Location
Jangamo District is a district in the central province of Inhambane, Mozambique. Its seat is the village of Jangamo. It has geographical boundaries to the north with the cities of Inhambane and Maxixe (Mozambique), the east by the Indian Ocean, south to the district of Inharrime and west to the district of Homoíne.
Area and Population
Jangamo District has an area of 294Km² and a population of 93,681, according to preliminary results of the 2007 Census, resulting in a population density of 72.4 inhabitants / km². It has a total of 291,123 households.
Sources of Income
Agriculture is the dominant activity and involves the majority of local households. The main food crops of the family sector are maize, cowpea, rice, cassava, vegetables and peanuts. The most important livestock in the district, for the consumption of households and marketing are pigs, chickens, goats, ducks and cows.
Health
In terms of health infrastructures, the Jangamo district has six health facilities (five health centers and one health post), of the 103 existing health facilities throughout the province. In general, there are 0.35 beds per 1000 inhabitants. There are 32 beds in both adult and paedriatic wards and 19 beds in maternity wards. In 2010, the case fatality rate due to malaria in paedriatic wards was 4,6%.
Number of APE
In Jangamo district there are five APE, of which two are under supervision of CS Jangamo (Jangamo health center), two are under the supervision of CS Jangamo, two are under the supervision of CS Cumbana and one is under the supervision of CS Ravena.
Education
In terms of infrastructure by the year 2008, the district Jangamo had a total of 66 schools of which 65 are primary schools of First and Second degrees and 1 secondary school. The total number of students is 25.108 for primary levels and 3781 to secondary school. The illiteracy rate is 83.9%.
