Inhambane province district of Govuro

Geographic Location
The district of Govuro is located in the northern part of Inhambane province, south Mozambique. Its seat is the village of Nova Mambone. It is limited in North by Machanga district, of Sofala Province, in East is limited by the Indian Ocean, in South by Inhassoro district and in West is limited by the district of Mabote.

Area and Population
Govuro district has an area of ??3 967 km² and a population of 34.494, corresponding to a population density of 8.7 inhabitants per km². It has a total of 7 899 households.

Sources of Income
Agriculture is the dominant activity and involves the majority of local households. The main food crops of the family sector are: sorghum, maize, millet, beans, groundnuts, cassava, rice and vegetables in order of importance. Corn, cotton, groundnuts and cashew nuts are grown but also for commercial purposes. The wildlife, fishing and hunting are an important supplementary source of food for families in the district and also for its potential in trade and tourism.

Health
In terms of health infrastructures, the Govuro district has seven health facilities, of the 103 existing health facilities throughout the province. In general, there are 1.87 beds per 1000 inhabitants. There are 24 beds in both adult and paedriatic wards and 33 beds in maternity wards. In 2010, the case fatality rate due to malaria in paedriatic wards was 5.1%.

Number of APE
In Govuro district there are 4 APE, of which two are under supervision of CS Doane (Doane health center); Each of the remaining two APE is under the supervision of CS Save, and CS Luidia respectively.

Education
In terms of infrastructure by the year 2008, the district of Govuro had a total of 28 schools of which 27 are primary schools of grades I and II and one secondary school. The total number of students is 9 300 for primary levels and 813 for the secondary level. The illiteracy rate is 61.3%.
