Visit of Stephen O’Brien MP, Chair of Malaria Consortium, to Uganda and Mozambique

Stephen O’Brien MP, Chair of the Malaria Consortium and Conservative Shadow Minister for Health/Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Malaria Group, went on a visit to Uganda from the 17th - 23rd September and to Mozambique from the 23rd-27th.  The purpose of his visit was to see first hand the work of the Malaria Consortium on the ground in these two countries.  

Uganda, 17th-23rd September 2007 

During his time in Uganda, Mr O’Brien met with various people including H.E. Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, Vice President of the Republic of Uganda and Senior Ministry of Health Officials. On the 19th September he travelled to Amuru in northern Uganda where he met with district officials, visited Amuru IDP camp and observed some of the malaria projects in the area. On the 20th he paid a visit to QCL (Quality Chemicals Limited) factory in Kampala, a modern pharmaceutical manufacturing plant.  

Mr O’Brien also met with several Ugandan MPs, travelled to Jinja to see the work of the Malaria Consortium in the Rapid Diagnostic Tests Pilot project and attended a Malaria Dinner in his honour. On the 21st he paid a Visit to Kiboga District and ended his trip with a Press Conference at Kabira Club on Saturday 22nd September.

Mozambique, 23rd -27th September 2007  

Stephen O'Brien, then proceeded to Mozambique and arrived in Maputo on Monday the 23rd. On the 24th he met with Mouzinho Saide, the National Director for the Promotion of Health and Disease Control, the Health Ministry department responsible for the malaria control programme. He also met with the country's First Lady, Maria da Luz Guebuza, and discussed the "Malaria-Free Children" campaign run by her office. On Tuesday the 25th Mr O’Brien went to look at the Malaria Consortium's work in the northern province of Nampula. This included visiting a remote rural hospital in Ribaué, a primary school of Mutauanha, on the outskirts of Nampula city, and Nampula Central Hospital.
