In a colourful event held at Namokora Sub County, Kitgum district joined the rest of the world in commemorating the first ever WMD on the 25th April 2008 and MC took centre stage in coordination of partners and district teams including organization on that day in a bid to galvanize action and showcase meaningful work of Partners in the fight against Malaria as a key partner in malaria. The chief Guest was Kitgum district Resident District Commissioner (RDC) who appreciated the contribution of partners and called for collective responsibility in the fight against malaria- "a disease without borders". The RDC reiterated government and political will in the fight against malaria. The district Health officer said malaria remains the number one killer in Kitgum and called for additional support and partnership to reverse the trend.
The theme for World Malaria Day "Malaria - a Disease without Borders" emphasizes the need for global collaboration in the fight against malaria, including the need for cross-border strategies, well-documented good practice and coordinated action at all levels- international, regional, national and local.
The Venue: Namokora sub county with stopover for social mobilization in Internally Displaced Camps (IDPs) and sub counties en route to the final venue. Namokora was selected for it has the highest number of cases of malaria reported annually in Kitgum district.
At the local level Kitgum District Health Team came out with the district theme derived out of the global as "Save a life now, prevent and seek early treatment for malaria". In the run-up to World Malaria Day, the Malaria Working Group steered by MC came up with a number of activities mainly informative, advocacy and engaging in discussions with the communities to show the commitment the district and partners have in delivering results of this Millennium Development Goal.
Activities:
- Distribution of ITNs. MC contributed 500 Long Lasting Insecticide Treated Nets (LLINs) out of a total of 786 nets contributed by partners for the day's event. These LLINs were distributed to 300 pregnant mothers through Namokora Health Centre (HC) IV that is supported by MC and 200 children under five years that included nursery and primary school malaria survivours.
- Development of banners, radio talk shows and spots

World Malaria Day button
In February 2008 Malaria Consortium launched a virtual campaign to celebrate the first World Malaria Day. World Malaria Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the burden of the disease and mobilise and engage civil society, decision makers and the international community. As part of its Mobilising for Malaria advocacy programme, Malaria Consortium launched a World Malaria Day Button in four languages (English, French, Portuguese and Spanish).
The aim was for as many websites as possible to display the button by 25th April 2008. By April 25th we were aware of over 100 websites displaying the button, including organisations like World Bank, UNITAID, PMI, WHO, DFID and the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
The Button provides a quick and easy way for those who want to get involved to do so as it can be displayed on websites and email footers. Displaying the World Malaria Day Button will link visitors to Roll Back Malaria's "World Malaria Day" site where they can find out what events are taking place on World Malaria Day.

Why a World Malaria Day?
This new international day will help raise awareness and understanding of malaria, a preventable and treatable disease which kills up to 3 million people and affects up to 500 million people in a year. Through donations, volunteering, campaigning, or even just speaking about it, people can make sure that malaria receives the media and public's attention it deserves.

When is World Malaria Day?
The first World Malaria Day is on 25th April 2008. It will be celebrated annually on the same day.
When was it established?
World Malaria Day was established and approved by the World Health Organisation in March 2007. Click here to view the resolution.
Why has it changed from Africa Malaria Day to World Malaria
Day?
Africa Malaria Day has taken place every year on the 25th April since 2001. It was a day that was set aside by African governments committed to rolling back malaria and meeting the United Nations malaria-related Millennium Development Goals. But now it is agreed that greater awareness is needed.
It is hoped that the establishment of World Malaria Day will mobilise communities across the world to get involved in fighting the disease and saving lives.
