Highlights of the year 2015-16

2015-16 was the first operating year of Malaria Consortium’s new five year strategy 2015-2019. We continued to deliver on our mission to improve lives in Africa and Asia through sustainable, evidence-based programmes that combat targeted diseases and promote child and maternal health.

A selection of our achievements are below:

Policy and strategy for elimination of targeted diseases

1. Guide national and international policies and strategies to accelerate and enhance control over the elimination of targeted diseases and malnutrition.

10 million preventive treatments

2. Reach at least 10 million people with preventive treatment, supporting the appropriate uptake of emerging vaccines and drug-based prevention approaches.

Effective vector control

3. Engage in at-scale delivery of effective vector control interventions and develop, instigate, promote and implement novel vector-focused approaches that reduce disease transmission.

  • We were engaged in the delivery of 5.5 million long lasting insecticidal nets in three states in Nigeria, reaching a population of 11 million people, and a further 0.65 million nets delivered through channels such as schools and clinics
  • In northern Mozambique, we delivered 1.4 million nets in Niassa and Nampula provinces to a target population of 2.6 million people
  • We implemented an integrated vector control management programme for dengue control in Cambodia
  • We studied the effectiveness and social acceptability of insecticide treated clothing in Southeast Asia

4. Improve access to, and the quality of services for, the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, and/or those that enhance child and maternal health.

5. Improve health system effectiveness and efficiency, through enhanced surveillance, outbreak response, referral, reporting, and capacity and market development.
