Cycling Solo Through Africa
Cape Town, 21st July: Adam Wolley left Marble Arch in London on 2nd January 2010 to cycle 15,000km to Cape Town. He travelled through 17 different countries covering the length of the continent over seven months, all in aid of Malaria Consortium.
Three years ago Adam contracted malaria in Tanzania and he would almost certainly have died if he had not been fortunate enough to have been given life saving medication straight away. He describes the experience as deeply humbling. He knew that people around him were dying from malaria every day, because they did not have access to bed nets and medication. He decided this was something he was determined to try and help change.
Adam saw a documentary about Mark Beaumont, a Scot who wanted to smash the World Record for cycling around the world and decided “I’m going to do that!”. Mark Beaumont is now a supporter of Adam’s efforts and is quoted on Adam’s fundraising site saying: "London to Cape Town is an inspired challenge for a great cause. Cycling in Africa is tougher than most other parts of this world and such a journey will involve many great highs and lows. Anyone checking this site please do show your support for Adam in any way you can."
Adam attributes contracting malaria to the fact that he did not sleep under a mosquito net and wants to raise money to buy as many nets as possible. It costs £5 to buy and deliver a mosquito net which will provide essential protection for two children or a pregnant mother and child. He has already raised an impressive £6,200 but set himself the ambitious fundraising target of £10,000 which will fund the purchase of 2,000 nets and will provide protection for 4,000 people.
In the months since he started, Adam has had to cycle through in thick snow in freezing conditions in France, been savagely bitten by mosquitoes in Italy, shared his tent with scorpions, and was involved in a horrific collision with a truck in Rwanda, which rendered him covered in stitches. None of this deterred him from reaching his final destination of Capetown. He came to the end of his journey having cycled for 200 days, covering a distance of over 14,000 kilometers.
