World Malaria Day around the world – in pictures
3 May 2016
This year’s World Malaria Day, held on April 25th, saw Malaria Consortium engage in a diverse range of activities in many of our countries. The commemorative day, which was established by the United Nations in 2007, provides the chance to highlight this killer disease which still claims the lives of 438,000 people each year. In the UK, it is an opportunity to push for the increased funding that will be needed to continue to fight malaria and to ensure that we maintain the progress made so far. In endemic countries, such as in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia, it provides a platform to spread public health messages and can help communities cope with cases of malaria by sharing practical advice.
The photo gallery below shows some of our activities on World Malaria Day this year:
For the World Malaria Day ‘Beating Malaria’ parliamentary event in the UK, Malaria Consortium staff gave demonstrations to attendees of mobile phone technology developed by our inSCALE project that helps community health workers in Africa diagnose malaria and other illnesses.
Our Nigeria Country Director, Dr Kolawole Maxwell, gave a speech at the event about the high malaria burden in Nigeria.

Malaria Consortium used vans in Ethiopia to spread awareness of malaria on the day. These efforts can help remote communities recognise the symptoms of malaria and advise them what to do when they get sick.

Malaria Consortium was one of many organisations that participated in World Malaria Day activities in Nampula province in Mozambique. There were song and dance performances (pictured above) as well as a march through the city, a health fair and speeches from the US Ambassador and the Health Minister.
Other activities included sports events, like the basketball tournament pictured above.
