ACCESS-SMC to feature at SMC symposium at global conference

10 November 2016

The 65th annual meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene will commence this Sunday. Included in the annual meeting will be a symposium on November 14 titled: Seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) at scale: evidence from eight countries. Co-chaired by Malaria Consortium and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, the event will focus on sharing key lessons learnt in delivering SMC at scale across the Sahel.

For the last two years, the UNITAID funded ACCESS-SMC project has supported national malaria control programmes in seven countries in the Sahel to bring preventive malaria treatment to eligible children during the rainy season, when they are most at risk. The symposium will cover a number of topics including monitoring the effectiveness of SMC and assessing the costs of implementing SMC at scale.

As the second year’s distribution of treatments draws to a close, lessons have emerged that provide valuable insights for future efforts and this symposium will provide a platform for experts to give evidence and share experiences from the ACCESS-SMC project and similar projects in the region.

The event will include speakers from the Malaria Research and Training Centre in Mali, the President’s Malaria Initiative, Institut de Recherche en Sciences de la Santé from Burkina Faso, Management Sciences for Health, and the University Cheikh Anta Diop.
